Sweep Guitar Picking
Sweep guitar picking is a difficult skill to master, but essential if you want to play arpeggios. It takes time to develop the coordination, muting and picking techniques required, but here is a simple exercise to get you started.
Place your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the G string. Play that note and then play the 1st fret of the B string with your 1st finger followed by the 1st fret of the E string with your first finger. This shape is an F major arpeggio. The root is on the first string. Play the exercise in reverse once you can play it ascending.
There are two important techniques to isolate in this sweep guitar picking exercise. The first is to learn how to sweep the pick up and down the strings. Each note is on a consecutive string, so your picking will be similar to strumming the guitar strings. Allow your pick to glide across the strings on a downstroke and pull the pick back across the strings for an upstroke. The picking should be one continuous motion.
The 2nd important technique is learning how to roll your first finger. You're fretting two notes on the same fret, but on different strings. After you pick the note on the 2nd string, your finger should roll over onto the 1st string. You have to fret the note on the 1st string and mute the previous note at the same time. This technique can take some serious practice if you've never tried sweep guitar picking.
Set your metronome to a low tempo and practice this exercise. If you want, play with some distortion because it will make any muting problems very obvious.
