What's so Special about a Fender Guitar?
For a layman, Fender guitar would not strike a chord but for the musician, Fender Stratocaster or "Strat" is a legendary instrument used by great musicians over the years. The original strat was first available in two color sunburst finish on a solid deeply contoured body made of ash. The bodies of later models were made of solid alder. The neck was made of a single piece of maple with 21 frets, black dot inlays and Kluson machine heads. The one piece neck was discontinued from 1958. Vintage fender guitars are worth a lot on the market today and are viewed as collector's items. Many musicians also prefer the timbre of the older models claiming it to be better than the modern versions.
Fender guitar models have been used for music genres like alternative rock, blues, pop, surf and rock music. Artistes like Eric Clapton, Buddy Holly were famous admirers and popularized the use of the strat model. From 1959 to 1967 the fret board was made with rosewood and available in other color choices including a variety of colorful car-like paint jobs that differed from the original sunburst finish. This new look model appealed to the surfer and hot-rod culture that was just gaining popularity at the time. Bands like Surfaris, the Ventures and Beach Boys popularized this culture. Guitarists like Hank Marvin of the Shadows promoted the strat model in their band. As Hank Marvin was so identified with the strat, upcoming bands like the Beatles initially avoided the strat, but George Harrison and John Lennon both used Strats for subsequent recording sessions after 1965.
Some artistes like Jimi Hendrix created a new sound with his Fender guitar by altering some settings. The three way pick up selector could be lodged between setting by wedging in matchsticks or toothpicks resulting in a unique sound when two pickups combined. Hendrix was able to create his trademark wobbly sound on his strat using various techniques. Strats were later modified to provide a thicker tone required for genres like hard rock and heavy metal. Vintage models are still in high demand. The fender guitars are available in signature range honoring famous musicians who used them. Some signature models include: Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, Eric Clapton, Billy Corgan, Dick Dale, Tom Delonge, David Gilmour, John Mayer, Dave Murray, Richie Sambora, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bonnie Raitt among others. The Fender guitar is a classic design that is as popular today as it was since its inauguration in 1954.
