Decoys play a major role in bringing in waterfowl to close ranges, so your decoys need to look as realistic as possible and be of high quality. There is a vast array of duck decoys on the market today. The endless amounts of choices can make it difficult to choose what to buy. However, by doing a little homework and scouting, you can easily choose the right decoy for you.
The first decoys my hunting partners and I started using were Storm Front decoys by Flambeau. These decoys are made to withstand the toughest hunting conditions. We generally like to use these decoys once the weather turns frigid, or the lakes start to ice up. The decoys are made of high-quality plastic, and can withstand a beating.
Early in the season, we like to use a mix of floaters and full-body decoys. The full-body decoys we like to use are Green Head Gear (GHG) Full Body Mallard Harvesters. These oversize decoys look extremely realistic, and provide great depth to your spread. The advantage of using full body decoys is that they look realistic to a duck from every angle. No matter which fly-way the duck chooses to take, they will see the same depth of the decoy the whole way into the spread.
When it comes to floater decoys, I recommend using Green Head Gear's Hot Buy II Series. These decoys look great for the price, and can withstand tough hunting conditions. Usually you can get a dozen of these decoys for under $30. The full-body decoys I like to use are also made by Green Head Gear. They are a more expensive decoy, but they add tremendous depth to your spread. Again, to be successful, your spread must look realistic. Their products can be found at http://www.greenheadgear.com/. We also like to use GHG floaters in our spreads too. For the price, you cannot go wrong with these decoys. The GHG line of decoys has come a long way over the past few years, and their products show for it.
I always like to have my Mojo Duck with me. It is a motorized decoy that continuously has the wings back-pedaling. The back-pedaling action makes it hard for a mallard to resist checking out the area.
So before making a sound choice on which decoys to buy, make sure and study reviews and choose the right product for your specific situation.
