First of all, don't beat yourself up. If you wasn't to know a secret about learning the fretboard on your guitar its that this is an on going process even for the pros. I mean that's partly what guitar playing is all about - perfecting your knowledge of the great musical tool, the fretboard. However, it can be very challenging in the beginning, so let me offer some advice to make this a little easier.
